Low Back Pain: A Similar Story

Lately, in the clinic we have been seeing a slew of patients with chronic low back pain who all share a similar story:

Their back “went out” on them or they had an initial injury long ago (sometimes decades ago). After the initial injury healed their back has continued to “go out”on them every couple years if they lifted wrong or did something silly. Then it progressed to a few times per year but with more moderate activity like yard work or home projects. Now, it flares up with even the slightest wrong movement or activity such as vacuuming or putting dishes in the dishwasher. They are now so fearful and hesitant to perform any kind of activity that could possibly set their back off that they start to lose quality of life…they can’t get on the floor to play with kids or grandkids, they’ve stopped going to the gym or participating in other forms of recreation, and they’ve come up with all kinds of workarounds for normal activities like putting on their socks or loading groceries in the car.

Does this sound like you or someone you know?

Unfortunately, there is no quick-fix, life-hack, or cookie cutter approach that will magically make things all better. Chronic back pain (or any chronic pain) is a complex problem requiring a thorough and holistic approach that takes into account the unique needs and desires of the individual.

Do NOT despair!

While back pain is challenging, it is also something that can be improved. The human body, especially the human spine, is a strong and robust system! It is not the dainty and fragile structure that we are often led to believe. With the right approach and a gradual yet progressive strengthening program, returning to your desired level of activity should be a realistic goal and expectation of rehab!
